My name is Mel and I have hip dysplasia. I’ve had a Right PAO (Periacetabular Osteotomy) and I’m currently awaiting my Left PAO later this year.
Upon seeing the blog section on here I thought I’d share a part of my recovery that I’m really proud of.
This picture is me 6.5 months post – op and I’m heading off to the gym. Going to the gym made me feel really happy, as did finishing my physiotherapy and getting back behind the wheel of my car – Just to name a few!
Don’t get me wrong it’s not always been that easy, I’ve had ups and downs during my recovery so far – But I try and focus on as many of the positives as I can.
I spent 13 weeks on crutches after my surgery and I lost a lot of muscle, my leg became considerably weaker than the other and I had discomfort in my knee. So, anything I can do at the gym to help my body recover and be ready for round two of surgery will be really beneficial all round.
People often ask me if it was worth it because it’s a long and challenging recovery but for me it was totally worth it.
I’m not looking forward to my next PAO surgery – I mean who would be? It is major surgery after all. But I am looking forward to having a much better quality of life afterwards!
Anyone reading this who is having a tough time post -op, it does get better and everyone’s recovery is completely different. There will be good days and bad days but don’t be disheartened. Try and focus on the positives!
